Important Points:

» Our preamble is the preface or the Introduction of our constitution.

» It is also known as key/soul of our constitution.

» It is based on “Objective Resolution” given by J. L. Nehru.

» It was amended by the 42nd amendment in 1976 in which 3 words – Socialist, secular and Integrity Were added.

The Preamble to the constitution of India reads as under:

WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, are having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:

JUSTICE, social, economic and political;

LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;

EQUALITY of status and of opportunity; and to promote among them all FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation;

IN OUR CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY this twenty-sixth day of November, 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION”.

Significance of preamble:

» Preamble to Indian constitution explains that it is the people of India who have enacted, adopted and given to themselves this constitution. Thus the sovereignty ultimately lies with the people of India.

» It tells about the ideals and aspirations of the people that needs to be achieved.

» The ideals and aspirations are different from each other.

» The ideals being achieved with the preamble declaring India as a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic, republic. 

» The aspirations being justice, equality, fraternity are yet to be achieved. So ideals provide means to achieve aspirations of people.

Important terms:

Sovereign

» The term implies that there is no authority outside India on which the country is dependent i. e.

» There is no authority above India, so India is to free to carryout its own affairs external or internal.

Socialist

» The term Socialist is added to the constitution of India by 42nd constitutional amendment act, 1976.

» The aim is to establish Socialist society through democratic means.

» According to supreme court the aim of democratic socialism is to end poverty, ignorance and disease.

» Indian socialism is blend of Marxism and Gandhian socialism, leaning more towards Gandhian socialism.

Secular

» The term Secular is also added by the 42nd constitutional amendment act of 1972.

» It also implies that state should not discriminate between citizens on grounds of religion.

Democratic

» India has indirect parliamentary democracy, in parliamentary democracy the executive i.e. Council of ministers is responsible to legislature for all its acts and policies.

Republic

» The democratic polity is of two types viz. monarchy, and republic.

» Indian form of democracy is republic.
