Here is the list of Governor Generals of India and important reforms. This is very important GK topic for every competitive exams, such as SSC, UPSC, PCS, RAILWAYS etc.

11. Sir Charles Metcalfe (1835-1836)

► He held the post temporarily and removed restriction on Vernacular press.

12. Lord Auckland (1836-1842)

► First Afghan War was fought in his reign.

13. Lord Ellen borough (1842 – 1844)

► Successfully completed Afghan war and annexed Sindh province for British in 1843.

► Became first Governor General of India to be recalled for defying the orders of the Court of Directors of East India Company.

► War with Gwalior (1843) occurred during his tenure.

14. Lord Wilberforce (1844 – 1844)

► He held the post temporarily

15. Lord Hardinge (1844 – 1848)

► The First Anglo-Sikh War (1845–46).

► The Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848–49).

► Treaty of Lahore.

16. Lord Dalhousie (1848-1856)

► Opened first Railway line from Bombay to Thane in 1853.

► Opened first Telegraph line from Calcutta to Agara in 1853.

► Introduced Doctrine of Lapse captured Satara (1848), Jaipur and Sambhalpur (1849), Udaipur (1852), Jhansi (1853), Nagpur (1854).

► Many bridges were constructed and started Grand Trunk Road.

► Established Postal system which made communication easier.

► In 1854, Wood’s Dispatch was passed, which provided the proper system of education from School to University.

► Widow Remarriage Bill was passed.

17. Lord Canning (1856 – 1862)

► He was the Governor General during the mutiny of 1857.

► He was appointed the first Viceroy after the war.
