Eligibility to become the President of India

Read the article to know about the Eligibility to become the President of India and election process of Indian President.

To become the President of India, a candidate should have a valid nomination and fulfill the following requirements and conditions:

1. Should be a citizen of India.

2. Should have completed the age of 35 years.

3. Should be qualified for election as a member of Lok Sabha.

4. Should be registered as an elector in any Parliamentary Constituency in India.

5. The candidate shall not hold any office of profit.

6. Candidate’s nomination form needs to be subscribed by at least 50 electors as proposers and 50 electors as seconders.

7. The candidate cannot be a member of either House of Parliament or of a House of the Legislature of any state once he or she becomes the President.

Electoral college and Value of Vote

The President is elected by an electoral college consisting of:

a. The elected members of both the Houses of the Parliament; and

b. The elected members of the Legislative Assemblies or the Vidhan Sabhas of the states.

c. The elected members of each union territory possessing an assembly (i.e., Delhi and Puduchery).
